When Fear is Good
Let’s get the best out of our fears.
Last week, I accidentally sent you the wrong newsletter (oops!). To make up for the mix-up, I’d like to share something special with you: a 50% discount on the digital version of my book Fear Enough.
Apart from the instinctual patterns that protect our physical integrity and life, psychological fear often acts as an invisible saboteur of our personal growth and even our capacity for mastery. Still, it’s worth asking: what other functions can fear fulfill?
Let’s imagine a scenario: we experience no psychological fear at all.
In that case, we wouldn’t be afraid of losing a job, making the wrong decisions, or overthinking. But we would also persist less. We might invest less in our relationships, give up more easily, and avoid the deeper effort that commitment requires.
That’s why Fearlessness is an Adventure is not about eliminating fear. It’s about the process—the ongoing exploration of how fear shapes us, the challenge of meeting our patterns, and the discovery of what we truly want to do.
Many fear patterns are already embedded in our personalities, hidden in what we call “preferences.” Not liking to sing, sell, surf, or speak in public often has less to do with talent and more to do with hidden fear. Sometimes what we call preferences are actually ways of avoiding fear.
Other patterns are easier to spot because they repeat in cycles of dissatisfaction. Frustration is uncomfortable, but it’s also a signal. It points us toward the fears that most want to be seen. That’s good news. Why?
Because when we recognize that something keeps reappearing—whether it’s trouble with relationships, business, jobs, or income—we can trace it back. What looks like an external barrier is often an inner one: a fear, calling for our attention through struggle.
And this is where fear becomes a gift.
Fear is great when we can see it.
I wish you a good start to the week!
Jose.
And if you want to go deeper into this exploration, I’ve created a mentoring program called Deconstructing Your Fears. It’s a monthly subscription with 4 sessions, where we work directly with your patterns, transforming fear from a saboteur into a teacher.
